s-acneOral & Topical Medication To Treat Teen & Adult Acne

The type of acne medication depends on your specific case and severity of your acne case. At Hurley Dermatology we are proud to offer teens and adults in the West Chester, Springfield, Exton and Malvern, PA area with a variety of topical and oral acne medication options. Dr. Hurley may also suggest dietary and lifestyle changes, in addition to medication. In more severe cases, a chemical peel may be the best option. Please read through the information below to learn more about your treatment options:

Oral and Topical Medications

There are a number of oral and topical medications available to treat mild to moderate acne. While the ingredients and directions vary from product to product, the topical medications work by either removing keratin that blocks your pores or fighting the bacteria that plays a role in the disease. Oral medications include the use of antibiotics which not only counteract the effects of bacteria in acne, but, in many cases, also help to reduce the inflammation. Occasionally, patients suffer from severe forms of acne that either do not respond to conventional therapy or are at high risk of creating permanent scarring. These patients will often need a much stronger oral medication known as isotretinoin (Accutane®). This is a very effective medication but it carries with it some risks of side-effects which your physician will thoroughly discuss with you if this becomes necessary.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels remove a layer of skin with a specially formulated chemical preparation, allowing your skin to grow back smoother and clearer. There are different levels of strengths available to meet the individual needs of each patient. Depending upon the type and strength of the peel you use, you may experience several days of peeling after the procedure. Chemical peels are also most effective when performed on a regular basis, with the needed interval between peels determined by the strength and type of peel that you choose.
